Getting Organised

Diary of an Affiliate Marketer

I’ve now completed getting the layouts of the websites up to date, adding Google Adsense and adding some more affiliate links when appropriate.

So I should be elated and ready to tackle my new project. I’ve chosen the theme and done some research but I have nagging doubts about whether I’m organised for the big push.

I want to ensure that I make the next leap forward and start making some real money online but judging by the state of my office I’m not ready.

There are DVD’s from the Chicago System Seminar laying about everywhere. Books on direct marketing such as Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples and My Life in Advertising & Scientific Marketing by Claude C. Hopkins.

By the way, these books are a must read if you are serious about making money online.

The first thing that becomes clear when you are shown how to market online through The System is that online marketing is just another form of direct marketing. Yes, that’s right … the internet is just another form of direct marketing and if you get that and understand that you are 50% of the way there.

Now the books I mentioned above are written by the best people who have ever been in the direct selling business and if you take the trouble to read these books you will have such an advantage over the majority of people who are competing with you on the internet.

I learnt something else this week as well. Age and experience does influence what you get out of everything. Let me explain.

When I first started in the financial services business at the age of 28 the first thing my area manager did was give me a dog eared copy of a book called How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling by Frank Bettger and told me to read it which I did.

Frank Bettger was a life insurance salesman and the book describes how he overcame his struggles and became one of the most successful salesmen of all time. I read the book and thought this was the point … struggling salesman makes good.

Now here I am 26 years later reading the same book and realizing what a fool I am. This book describes in each chapter in great detail how to communicate and influence people and is one of the best direct marketing books you could own.

When you apply Frank’s principles to your website your results will dramatically improve.

Anyway I’ve just realized that I’m not organised the way I want to be. I want to have a plan, a blueprint to work to so that I have goals and set tasks to stop me wandering and meandering from site to site and task to task.

I need to stay focused.

Fortunately I remember a podcast I had listened to some time back by James Martell who is well known in affiliate marketing circles.

James had been discussing a world famous celebrity Zig Ziglar and how Zig carried out his planning which is good enough for me.

So I set out Zig’s 7 steps and start answering them for myself.

  1. Write down your goals
  2. List all the reasons why reaching them is important to you
  3. Identify all the obstacles you will need to overcome
  4. Identify all the people, services and resources you will need to enlist to reach your goals
  5. Identify the exact things that you need to do personally to achieve your goal
  6. Develop a set of action steps you will need to follow
  7. Assign specific time frames to each of the steps

It’s now very late and I need to formalise this plan, this blueprint tomorrow.
